Levels of Finish – Plastering

Plasterboard Finish Levels

Plasterboard is a versatile and efficient building material that provides a smooth, durable surface for walls and ceilings while allowing for a wide range of finishes. It’s widely used in both residential and commercial construction because it’s quick to install, cost-effective, and delivers a clean, modern look.

Did you know there are different levels of plasterboard finishes? These levels determine how smooth and refined the final surface will be, depending on the space, lighting conditions, and the type of paint or finish being used.

Different finish levels are then chosen depending on how the space will look and be used, including the lighting, surface finish, and overall design style. The higher the finish level, the smoother and more refined the final surface will be, making it ideal for premium or design-focused interiors where appearance matters most.

Choosing the Right Finish

Selecting the right plasterboard finish level is an important step in achieving the desired look and performance of your space. Each level is designed for different applications, depending on how visible the surface will be, the type of lighting in the room, and the quality of finish required.

Level 3

Level 3 is typically used in areas where the surface will not be directly visible or will be covered by other materials. This includes spaces such as service areas, above ceiling systems, or walls that will later receive heavy textures or finishes. It provides a practical, functional base rather than a decorative finish.

Level 4

Level 4 is the most commonly specified finish for residential and commercial interiors. It delivers a smooth, consistent, and paint-ready surface that works well in most everyday applications. This level is ideal for standard lighting conditions and is suitable for typical flat or matte paint finishes, making it the go-to choice for living spaces, offices, and general-purpose rooms.

Level 5

Level 5 is recommended for high-end or design-focused spaces where appearance is critical. It is best suited to areas with strong or directional lighting, or where glossy, satin, or premium paint finishes are used. Level 5 provides the highest quality surface preparation, helping to minimise the visibility of joints, shadows, and surface imperfections for a flawless architectural result.
